Two or three companies. Is a fractional role your next move?

One evening for COOs, CFOs, CMOs and other senior leaders wondering whether a fractional CxO role could be their next step. Martin Fabry and Vladimír Houba show how it works in practice, what it pays, and how to tell if you are ready.

What if your next career move were two or three companies where you are responsible for a clear result, sit at the table where decisions are made, and see more of how businesses really work than any single role shows you?

That is a fractional role: a real leadership role, a few days a week, with results you are responsible for.

What you'll take away

Three things in one hour

1

What a fractional role really is

How it differs from consulting and interim work, and why it depends on one clearly agreed result.

2

The honest economics

Day rates in the region, how many days really get paid, and what a realistic first year looks like.

3

Are you ready?

The questions that tell you whether to start now, prepare first, or stay where you are. Live Q&A at the end.

The fractional role

In a fractional role, you own the result.

  • Embedded in two or three companies.
  • At the table where decisions are made.
  • Paid for the result you deliver.

How a fractional role differs

Consultant

Role
Advises from the side
Paid for
Advice
Leaves when
The report is done

Interim

Role
One company, full time, for a fixed period
Paid for
A mandate
Leaves when
The gap is filled

Fractional role

Role
Two or three companies, part-time, ongoing
Paid for
A result
Leaves when
Results stop improving
A fractional week

What two roles can look like, Monday to Friday

Mon

Company A

COO role. Operations review, team one-to-ones.

Tue

Company A

Supplier issues, board report on results.

Wed

Company B

COO role. Delivery plan, hiring, the weekly numbers.

Thu

Your practice

Proposals, reporting, learning, the next conversation.

Fri

Company B · morning

Weekly review with the owner.

The rest

Your own project, sport, family.

  • 2/5 Company A
  • 1.5/5 Company B
  • 1/5 Your practice
  • 0.5/5 The rest

This is one example. Every fractional week looks different, and the balance is yours to set.

From Martin's practice

One role that worked, and one that didn't

Two anonymised fractional roles. On the evening we go through both, and what made the difference.

A robotic arm machining metal parts, an export truck at the loading gate
Worked

A B2B channel built from zero, then exports

Industrial manufacturer · products for automotive and heavy industry

No B2B structure, no business price list and no export experience. The fractional sales leader reviewed pricing, chose priority markets with the leadership, built a price and rebate structure for each market, and hired a team step by step: acquisition, key accounts and back office.

10–15% growth a year in individual product lines. The engagement is in its third year.
A brick office building with a modern glass extension, one meeting room lit after hours
Didn't work

When the role never got real authority

Family-owned B2B technology company · sales cycles of one to five years

The fractional leader was hired to fix falling sales, but every change to process, pricing or approach was turned down: "we have done it this way for twenty years." Old deals kept revenue looking fine while the pipeline of new opportunities quietly shrank. By the time it showed in revenue, it was too late to correct.

A fractional role without authority is expensive advice nobody follows. We will show how to agree on authority before the work starts.
